Costa del Sol / Costa del Golf — something for every handicap

They don't call this stretch of coast the Costa del Golf for nothing. Between Málaga airport and Gibraltar — barely an hour and a half end to end — there are more than sixty courses, the densest concentration of golf in continental Europe. Drive the A-7 west and they simply keep coming: seaside layouts where the fairways run down towards the Mediterranean, parkland tracks threaded through umbrella pines, and mountain-foothill courses that climb into the Sierra with views that make club selection genuinely difficult, because you keep looking up.

The range suits every game. There are gentle, walkable courses where a society of mixed handicaps will all come home smiling — Miraflores, La Noria and Cerrado del Águila among them — and there are examinations. Marbella's Golf Valley in Nueva Andalucía holds three of Spain's most storied clubs almost side by side: Aloha, Los Naranjos and Real Club de Golf Las Brisas, the last a Robert Trent Jones Sr masterpiece that has hosted the World Cup twice and rewards precise, thoughtful golf more than raw length. Closer to home, La Cala Resort — ten minutes up the road — is Spain's largest golf resort: three championship courses by Cabell Robinson spread across a valley of protected hillside, each with its own character and none of them a pushover off the back tees.

What unites them is condition and setting. Year-round sunshine means year-round greenkeeping, and courses here peak in exactly the months when northern Europe's are shut or sodden. Expect quick greens in winter sun, sea breezes that freshen after lunch and sharpen the closing holes, and the recurring Costa del Sol dilemma: sea view to the left, mountain view to the right, ball somewhere in between.

The perfect base for a golfing group

Few places on the coast put you closer to the middle of all this than Golf Gardens Miraflores. The community is literally encircled by Miraflores Golf Club — you could carry your clubs to the first tee — and from the front gate, well over a dozen of the courses above are within twenty minutes' drive, with La Cala's three championship layouts and the Mijas Golf duo practically neighbours. The apartment sleeps six across three bedrooms, the garage swallows two cars and the trolleys, and the terraces overlooking the course were made for the post-round debrief.
